3D Game Development Class - Design, Build & Launch a 3D Game!

Duration: 1 Hour 30 Minutes | Ages: 8-14 | Class Size: Small Groups

Hands-On 3D Game Design for Kids Using Real Game Engines!

In this immersive game development class, kids will first use cardboards and connectors to make a game level, then they will explore how to make their level in a video game, using the PlayCanvas browser-based 3D game engine. With just an iPad, keyboard, mouse and their imagination, students will build, edit, and publish a functional 3D game level. They’ll learn to manipulate 3D objects, apply materials and physics, and gain experience with industry-standard design tools, all while having a blast bringing their ideas to life in a fully playable game!

Hands-on Learning Make your level design using cardboards, then use a 3D game engine to bring it to life!

STEM & Technology Foundations Master key game dev concepts like physics, logic, rendering, and level design.

✔ Creativity & Critical Thinking Design your own level layout, choose materials, and shape the game world.

Real-Time Feedback & TestingTest and improve your game instantly with every new edit.

How the Class Works

Step 1:
Learn the Level Design
in Real Life

Students explore and learn level design using cardboards and special cut and connect system. They will use markers to color their level.

Step 2:
Edit, Move, and Place
3D Objects in 3D Engine

They’ll learn a level design in the 3D game engine, and modify scenes to understand positioning, scaling, and transformation.

Step 3:
Add Physics &
Behavior

Students apply physics properties like rigid bodies, collisions, and gravity to create real-world interactions.

Step 4:
Test, Debug &
Iterate

Kids test their games in real time, learn from errors, and keep iterating to improve playability and fun!

What Kids Will Learn

🎮 Intro to Game Engines

  • Learn the ins and outs of PlayCanvas and its tool sets, a real-time 3D development platform.

🧱 Object Manipulation in 3D Space

  • Create, copy, move, rotate, and scale 3D models using X/Y/Z axes in a browser-based environment.

⚙️ Physics & Collisions

  • Apply real-world physics like gravity, friction, and collision using rigid bodies and colliders.

🎨 Materials & Textures

  • Learn to assign materials, textures, and lighting—making every level unique.

🗺️ Level Design & Scene Building

  • Design and customize your level with cardboards, then bring it to life in a 3D game engine.

🚀 Game Publishing

  • Launch and test the game iteratively and share the final build in class!
